Kelley's Island Tour

It's a beautiful morning.  I got the bikes out and got them ready to go. We put a load of laundry in and then road out the east end of the island.  The beaches reminded of the Bahamas.  The wind was blowing pretty hard from the NE so the east end of the island had some good waves.

The first stop on the trip was the Kelley's Island Wine Company.  We tried the sampling tray of 6 "wines".  Only 2 were OK but 1 of the 2 was imported from Pelee Island. Hard to imagine how they can make such sweet wines. Or why.

Back on the road, we swung by the marina to put the laundry into the dryer. A quick pitstop.  The next stop was the Post Office on the other side of the main town.  All of the characters of town were in getting the mail.  Apparently many had not yet received their tax bills.  Hang out at the post office and get all the info on the island.

The next stop is the Kelley's Island Brewery.  It was a good time to stop for lunch.  Again I tried the sampler of 3 beers.  Not bad a winery and a brewery, all before noon.

After lunch, we continued around the island.  At the north end there is the North Beach, beautiful spot but may be susceptible to toxic algae.

Also at the north end of the island is a fine example of glacial grooves.  Grooves dug into the rock by glaciers.  One of the best examples still in existence.  There were better ones here but were removed during the early development of the island for quarrying. These ones were discovered and excavated in the 70's and are now carefully preserved.

This morning, we were sitting around drinking our coffee when a golf cart drove by.  Usual morning greetings were exchanged.  The golf cart turns around and comes back.  Its Mike Phinney and his wife, Kathy.  I know Mike from Star sailing at the Bacardi Cup in Miami every year.  I knew that Mike was from Ohio but was not sure where.  After sailing by Lorain, Ohio, were we saw a Star sailing we looked up the fleet and found out the Mike sailed out of Lorain.  I did not expect to see him on Kelley's Island. Mike has a place on the island and has invited us to lunch before we make the trek to Put-In-Bay.

  1. I do enjoy reading stories of cruising in foreign countries. It's all so exotic, and two tastings in a morning sounds quite decadent. We tasted Ohio wines about 25 years ago and were aghast at how sweet and fruity they were. The winery folks assured us they liked them that way.
